I later looked up the term kitsch, and found it to mean “considered to be in poor taste because of excessive sentimentality.” Some artists (Odd Nerdrum, for instance) had even adopted this term as a badge of honour (to the further disgust of their already hostile critics), and I felt that Japhrey could profitably do likewise.

But Japhrey’s work was not really kitsch, unless by ‘sentimentality’ one meant any kind of strong human trait, as love, honour, strength of will, melancholia, etc. And if those are ‘excessively sentimental’ then count me a sentimentalist. But what’s in a word?

I also looked up ‘cosmopolitan’ and found it was used chiefly to mean “someone who is at home everywhere.” So what it really meant was: citizen of nowhere. These cosmopolitans were the original Nowhere Men, as Maddy put it (she was always citing Beatles lyrics, for some reason) and the name stuck.

We were at war with the Middle Men, the Nowhere Men.
